'Bob le Flambeur (Bob the Gamble)' is no gamble

This 1956 French black and white flick is a fascinating trip back in time.

Jean-Pierre Melville’s film checks in with a desperate, down-on-his-luck gambler who plans a daring heist. He’s connected to shady characters, total slime balls, beautiful women, cool cops and is completely unable to resist the next bet.

A sure bet is that you’ll love the plot, the cinematography and the terrific acting.

It’s old-time movie making at its best. There are loads of scenes that are absolutely unnecessary to the story, bunches of bad edits that slow the movie down and loads of dialogue now considered to be absolutely terrible.

However, it’s irresistible. They just don’t make movies this good anymore.

Mr. Movie rating: 4 1/2 stars

Not rated, probably PG-13 for brief nudity. It plays Friday, Jan. 15 only at the Battelle Auditorium at 8 p.m.

5 stars to 4 1/2 stars: Must see on the big screen
4 stars to 3 1/2 stars: Good film, see it if it's your type of movie.
3 stars to 2 1/2 stars: Wait until it comes out on video.
2 stars to 1 star: Don't bother.
0 stars: Speaks for itself.
