Nine has a split-personality.
There are the innovative and beautifully designed sets, the lavish costumes, the pitch-perfect effects and bells and whistles that contribute to our thinking director Rob Marshall (Chicago) is a genius. It will rivet you to your seat and at times stuns the senses. Nine is an amazing piece of work.

Then there is the movie that while gorgeous is overproduced, overwritten and packed with characters that you not only cant love but that you cant even like.
Chief among them is Nines main character, an egocentric, womanizing movie producer, writer, director.
Nine is hurt by the one-note story. Surrounded by some of the most beautiful and talented actresses in the world, Daniel Day-Lewis plays the womanizing film director who seems to have much in common with this movie. Hes out of ideas. Thats secondary to being tortured by his faithlessness but unable to stop.
Ive never seen the Broadway musical. Im told its exceptional. That may be true but you cant prove it by Marshalls movie. The angst suffered by Day-Lewis character is pounded into you via headache producing cuts and edits in one tuneless, soulless song after another.
One does however have to give Marshall kudos for casting. Day-Lewis co-stars with Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotillard, Judy Dench, Kate Hudson and the legendary Sophia Loren who all do their own singing.
Daniel Day-Lewis doesnt do many movies. When he does, Day-Lewis always gives the years best performance by anyone in any acting category. Not last year. Not with Nine.
Sometimes less is more. Nine is eight too many.

It’s hard not to take aspects of this job personally. New Year’s Eve is an example.
For me, having to sit through used-to-be Hollywood TV icon and now movie producer and director Garry Marshall’s film is punishment for my ripping of last year’s equally awful holiday opus Valentine’s Day .
I wasn’t alone. Critics panned the film by the score. But this is take it personally day, so I’ll take having to review it as punishment.

Novels and screenplays often mix like oil and water. The book can be brilliant, deep and insightful. The screenplay and movie ends up scratching the surface. They miss key points or worse - because screenplay writers much of the time lack the balls to go for it - have an altered plot for audience gratification and a better box office take.
Then there are novelists that decide they ought to write their own screenplays. Novel writing and screenplay writing are another oil and water scenario. The novelist, familiar with the characters, their lives and what happens to them, often forgets the viewer doesn't know all of the in depth details.
