Crime roundup: I-82 rollover injures Umatilla woman

By Sara Schilling and John Trumbo, Herald staff writers

A 73-year-old Umatilla woman was hurt Monday morning when the pickup she was in rolled on Interstate 82 in Benton County near the Oregon border.

Annie Z. Sharp was taken to Good Shepherd Medical Center in Hermiston, said the Washington State Patrol. She was treated and later released.

The 2003 GMC Sierra, driven by Boyd D. Sharp, 73, of Umatilla, was headed west on the interstate at 8:29 a.m. He deactivated the four-wheel drive, causing the rear of the vehicle to oscillate, the patrol said.

The truck left the road and rolled onto its side, the patrol said.

2 teens arrested as suspects in Kennewick vehicle prowls

Two teenage boys have been arrested on suspicion of prowling vehicles on West Hood Avenue in Kennewick, and police are investigating whether they're linked to other cases.

The boys, a 14-year-old from Kennewick and a 16-year-old from Pasco, were booked into the juvenile detention center. Their names weren't released pending charges being filed.

Kennewick police were called to the 4000 block of West Hood Avenue at 11 p.m. Sunday because of reports of two males "getting into vehicles and checking car doors in the area," said Kennewick police.

The teens were found in the parking lot and were arrested on suspicion of second-degree vehicle prowl.

Officers also responded to five reports of thefts from vehicles over the weekend -- on the 400 block of South Cleveland Street, the 400 block of South Dawes Street, the 5000 block of West Eighth Avenue, the 300 block of South Filmore Street and outside the Sears store at Columbia Center mall.

In all cases, the vehicles were unlocked, police said. Items taken included a backpack, car stereos, cash, jewelry and a GPS unit.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Crime Stoppers line at 586-TIPS, 1-800-222-TIPS or go to www.tricitiescrimestoppers.org.

3 men, 3 teens accused in Hermiston graffiti case

HERMISTON -- Hermiston police arrested three men and two teenage boys for allegedly painting graffiti inside the Bella Vista subdivision near Northeast Fourth Street and Northeast Sky View Court in Hermiston.

Officers responded to a report of suspicious activity in the area at 4:50 p.m. Sunday and stopped a 1997 Red Chevy Cavalier that was driving away, Hermiston police said.

Officers found cans of paint in the car and other items that linked the occupants to the graffiti, said Hermiston Lt. Tim Beinert.

The car's driver, Alonzo Alcarez, 33, along with passengers Cesar Jimenez, 19, Louis Mendoza, 18, and two boys ages 16 and 17, are facing possible charges of second-degree criminal mischief, unlawful application of graffiti and unlawful possession of graffiti implements, police said.

Alcarez also was cited for driving with a suspended license and driving uninsured, police said. He was booked into the Umatilla County jail.

Armed robbery reported at Prosser auction yard

PROSSER -- Benton County sheriff's deputies were questioning one person Monday night following a reported armed robbery on West Shelby Road in Prosser.

Sgt. Kevin McCary said the robbery occurred in the late afternoon in an auction yard at 130801 W. Shelby Road.

Officers were searching for other people and a vehicle in connection with the incident, McCary said.

No other information was available Monday night.

Patrol car knocked into Boardman firefighter

A Boardman firefighter, a woman and a toddler suffered minor injuries Monday afternoon when a car on Interstate 84 near Tower Road hit a Morrow County sheriff's patrol car that was stopped for another accident.

Firefighter Rick McKee, 22, of Boardman, was knocked down by the front of the patrol car after a vehicle driven by Sierra Ames, 18, of Pendleton, crashed into it. McKee did not need medical attention.

Jamie Bussard, 23, and Halie Albright, 2, of Nampa, Idaho, were in the patrol car to stay warm when the crash occurred. They were not hurt.

Minutes earlier, Bussard, Albright and Justin Bussard, 19, had been in a single-vehicle rollover at the same spot. The interstate was icy at the time, officials reported.

The sheriff's deputy, fire department, Morrow County ambulance and Oregon State Police were at the scene when Ames struck the patrol car about 3:40 a.m.

"While this incident resulted in only minor injuries, it had the potential to have been much worse," said Morrow County Undersheriff Steve Myren.
