River's Edge book drive aids Ugandan children

By the Herald staff

After students at River's Edge High School in Richland watched a documentary about children in war-torn Uganda, they decided to take action.

They have raised about $2,000 though a book drive and still are looking for more book donations.

"Everybody has books sitting in their garage somewhere. All you have to do is bring them in," said Cheyenne Smith, 17, a senior and one of the organizers.

Community members can donate any type of book -- from textbooks to children's books to novels. They are sold online, with the money used to help Ugandan children through the nonprofit Invisible Children organization.

Smith and other students in teacher Brian Sites' international problems class were touched by the documentary about the plight of Ugandan children.

"You never imagine something that bad," said senior Laura Kamrowski, 17. "You see that and you want to do something."

Book donations can be dropped off at the school through Dec. 15. River's Edge is at 975 Gillespie St., Richland.
