WALLA WALLA -- Scammers are still targeting Walla Walla businesses, trying to get them to advertise on a fictitious athletic poster, Walla Walla police said.
Three weeks ago, police issued a warning to businesses after a scammer got a business owner to pay $300 for advertisements by saying she was raising money for Garrison Middle School.
The owner then learned that no fundraising efforts were taking place for any of the district's schools.
This week, Walla Walla School District officials called police after a local business called to check on a claim that someone was selling ad space for a Wa-Hi athletic poster, Officer Tim Bennett said Friday.
The owner was suspicious, kept the woman named "Melody" on the phone and called Wa-Hi to see if it was legit, Bennett said.
He was told it wasn't, and when he questioned Melody more about it, she hung up, Bennett said.
"The business owner handled this situation correctly," Bennett said. "Always confirm the information with the benefiting agency before providing account information."
