Help needed for injured pup thrown out with garbage

By Paula Horton, Herald staff writer

Oscar, a 10-week-old puppy literally tossed away like garbage, needs help recovering from a broken leg.

The injured pup was found in the middle of the night recently abandoned in a Dumpster at a Kennewick apartment complex with only a moldy blanket for comfort, said Cory Wright of Richland.

Oscar was rescued by an apartment resident and taken to the manager the next day.

The manager then called Wright, who couldn't resist taking Oscar in, he said.

"When you find an abandoned puppy, you can't just leave him or take him to the pound," Wright said. "I just needed to get the little guy fixed."

Oscar was taken to the Meadows Hills Veterinary Center in Kennewick and given a temporary cast nearly as big as he is, but he still somehow managed to move around a bit, Wright said.

"He's so cute ... but it's just really sad too," he said.

But the injury to his hind leg was so bad, it couldn't be fixed with just a cast. The veterinarians at Pet Emergency Care in Pasco performed the surgery Friday.

Wright learned Friday evening that Oscar needed four metal pins inserted to hold the wounded leg together, but, otherwise, the surgery went well.

Wright, who has a photography business and co-owns Taste Tri-Cities magazine, isn't sure how much the final bill will be, but he started a website called HelpOscar.com to take donations to help.

Any extra money will be donated to Pet Overpopulation Prevention, he said.

Pictures of Oscar and updates on how he's doing will be posted on the website. Click on the link to go to Oscar's page on BeGoodtoYourPlanet.com.
