EPHRATA -- Grant County commissioners have appointed David Matney as county coroner.
Matney is an investigator in the county prosecuting attorney's office. He will take on his new duties Dec. 7.
Grant County Commissioner Cindy Carter said the board was impressed with his criminal justice background and his work ethic.
Matney was named from a slate of six candidates, selected by Grant County Republicans. Matney will replace Jerry Jasman, who resigned as coroner after pleading guilty to disorderly conduct.
He was arrested after a
June 26 incident in which he refused to allow his chief deputy coroner, Lynette Henson, out of the county vehicle he was driving, according to the Grant County Sheriff's Office.
Jasman is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 7. Under a plea agreement, he is allowed to stay in office until a replacement takes over.
From Nov. 18 through Dec. 6, while Jasman is on vacation, Henson will take on coroner duties, Carter said. Henson has retained the title of chief deputy coroner, even though she has been working for the Superior Court administrator since shortly after the incident with Jasman.
Carter said it will be up to Matney to appoint a deputy coroner once he takes office.
