More Tri-Citians buckling seat belts

By Paula Horton, Herald staff writer

More Tri-City motorists appeared to be buckling up when they hit the road -- or they just weren't driving in areas where special seat belt enforcement patrols were being conducted.

Just nine seat belt citations were written during the recent two-week Nighttime Click it or Ticket patrols in the area, officials said. The latest patrol ran from Oct. 23 to Nov. 8.

In early summer, 93 tickets were issued to unbuckled motorists.

In addition to the seat belt violations, law enforcement officers in Benton and Franklin counties stopped six drivers for DUI and arrested five motorists on misdemeanor warrants, officials said.

They also issued six infractions for child-passenger safety violations, 11 speeding tickets, three citations to uninsured motorists and four tickets to drivers with suspended or revoked licenses.

The Kennewick Police Department, Franklin County Sheriff's Office and the Washington State Patrol participated in the extra emphasis patrols with the support of the Benton-Franklin Traffic Safety Task Force.

Statewide, extra patrols were conducted by about 50 agencies and the state patrol.

TRI-CITY OFFICERS TO WORK AS SERVERS TO RAISE MONEY FOR KIDS

Tri-City cops will be helping serve creamy fettuccine alfredo, manicotti or spaghetti and meatballs tonight and hoping to raise money for Christmas gifts for needy families.

Tips for Santa's Kids, sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Police Tri-Cities Lodge No. 7 and local law enforcement, will run from 5 to 8 p.m. at Olive Garden in Kennewick.

Officers will be helping servers at the restaurant and collecting extra tips toward this year's Christmas Families funds and the annual Shop with a Cop program.

For more than 13 years, local law enforcement agencies have been helping children and families have a merrier holiday season with the special shopping event and sponsoring families in need, officials said.

PASCO POLICE TO CREATE BOOK COVERING THEIR HISTORY

Pasco police officials making plans for the department's 100th anniversary next year are looking for old photos and police department memorabilia.

Officers hope to create a book covering a brief history of the Pasco Police Department.

They're seeking help from the public -- especially retired officers or officers' families -- in finding pictures and other items to be used in the book.

Original photos will be copied and returned and photos can be credited, if requested.

Anyone with information or items to contribute can call Officer Rigo Pruneda at 727-8528 or e-mail prunedar@pasco -wa.gov.

MASONS MOUNT PLAQUE AT KENNEWICK STATION DEDICATION

A dedication ceremony was held by the Masons of the Tri-Cities at the Kennewick police station Thursday.

The Masons mounted a marble plaque on the 44,000-square-foot building at 211 W. Sixth St.

The two-story, state-of-the-art station opened in May across from city hall and cost about $10.5 million to build and furnish.
