GEORGE -- A masked burglar and two other suspects are being sought in connection with a shootout Monday evening at a Grant County-area home, authorities said.
Six shots were fired between the would-be burglars and a cousin of the homeowner, but no one was apparently hit in the gunfire exchange though one burglar was hit by a car, said Grant County Undersheriff John Turley.
Grant County sheriff's deputies were called at 6:20 p.m. to a possible burglary in the 19000 block of Road 6 Southwest, about 6 miles southwest of George, Turley said.
The owner, Steele Brown, and his cousin, Daniel, arrived home and found one suspect standing near a vehicle and two others attempting to run from the house, Turley said.
Brown, concerned for his safety, sped past a parked car in the driveway instead of stopping to confront a man wearing a ski mask, Turley said.
The suspect was standing by the driver's side door and opened the door as Brown went by.
Brown's vehicle clipped the door and "... unfortunately for the masked burglar, he was run over by Brown's vehicle as it sped by," Turley said.
The would-be burglar then fired several shots at Brown's vehicle. His cousin, who carries a gun, fired back toward the suspects, the undersheriff said.
Investigators have not yet determined the extent of damage to Brown's home, what items were stolen or the masked burglar's identity or extent of injuries.
Detectives with the sheriff's major crime unit searched the area and found a .22-caliber handgun that had been reported stolen from Othello, Turley said.
Investigators are looking for an older gray or silver four-door Pontiac.
They also are encouraging people in the Royal Slope and George areas to make sure their property is secured at all times and to report any suspicion vehicles or people in the area.
