Sunday was the NFL coming-out party for St. Louis Rams rookie Brandon Gibson, who holds Washington State University's record for career receiving yardage.
The Puyallup product grabbed seven passes for 93 yards at home for the Rams in their 28-23 loss to undefeated New Orleans.
Here's what my friends at Rotowire.com wrote Sunday night about Gibson's future as a fantasy play.
ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson, a sixth-round rookie who was traded by Philadelphia in October, had never caught a pass in his short pro career. Gibson is more of a possession receiver, but he's got some value considering St. Louis doesn't have a lot of viable options at wideout other than Donnie Avery.
Rotowire provided the following update Monday...
"Gibson figures to see an expanded role going forward with Keenan Burton thought to have suffered a serious knee injury Sunday, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. ...
ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS:Gibson hauled in seven catches for 93 yards Sunday and while we aren't expecting that to be the norm, Gibson may be worth a look in deeper leagues for those looking to add some wideout depth."
On Tuesday, my long-time friends and fellow Huskies at Fantasy Index, whose advice guided me to my office title last season, noted that Gibson may pay dividends for those competing in a point-per-reception format. (Ironically, the Seattle-based fantasy think tank also pass along news late Tuesday that Jordan Kent a former Oregon Duck and Seattle Seahawk has signed with the Rams to fill Burton's spot on the roster.)
The aforementioned office league fields just 10 teams, so it doesn't have the depth of a "man's league" and I won't be adding Gibson there. And I doubt if the Richland-based owner of The Sons of Travis Henry the best-named fantasy franchise ever needs the former Cougar.
However, scoring in my Yahoo extended "All in the Family" league is heavy on passing. There's the ability to start as many as five receivers, so based on scouting by Rotowire and Fantasy Index, I've taken a flier on Gibson.
So I say, "Go Coug" while humming my favorite Billy Idol song.
