PASCO -- The CBC volleyball team is headed back to the NWAACC tournament. The Hawks outlasted Walla Walla in five sets for the second time in a week to earn the East Region's No. 4 seed.
"This group really dug in to get into the tournament," said coach John Patrick, who is in his last season. "Now maybe we can make something happen."
CBC (25-16) got 24 kills apiece from Amber Durand and Eva Grassl to beat the Warriors 21-25, 25-22, 25-27, 25-22, 15-4.
The Hawks, who will be making their 18th appearance at the NWAACC tournament in the past 22 seasons, open at 2 p.m. Thursday against South champion and second-ranked Mount Hood (29-9) at Mount Hood Community College in Gresham, Ore.
-- The CBC women's soccer team will take on Tacoma in the NWAACC semifinals at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Starfire Stadium in Tukwila. The Hawks (15-3-1) are the defending NWAACC champions and take on a Titans (9-6-0) team they beat 3-1 earlier this season.
-- Top-ranked Walla Walla (19-1-0), looking for a spot in the title game for a third straight season, takes on Chemeketa (12-1-1) in the first semifinal at 11 a.m.
-- The Walla Walla men's soccer team (13-3-1), the defending NWAACC champion, plays Chemeketa (18-0-2) in a rematch of last year's title game in the first semifinal at 4 p.m. Spokane (9-8-4) and Bellevue (12-4-4) play in the second semifinal.

PASCO -- The key to winning basketball games is putting together a good run or two during the game.
The Columbia Basin College women and the Walla Walla men did just that Wednesday night to win their respective contests in an NWAACC East Region men's-women's doubleheader in Pasco.
The CBC women used a 17-4 run to open the second half and blew open a tight contest, beating the Warrior women 65-53.

WALLA WALLA -- Pasco graduate Kaylie Winston scored four goals -- including a natural hat trick -- to lead Walla Walla to a 6-0 home win over Clark, moving the Warriors into the NWAACC semifinals for the seventh consecutive season.
After a goal by Ali Skogrand in the 20th minute gave Walla Walla a 1-0 lead, Winston -- the NWAACC scoring leader -- netted goals in the 38th, 40th and 51st minute, giving her 30 on the year.
The two-time defending NWAACC champion Warriors also got a goal and assist from Sami Hansen.

TUKWILA -- The Columbia Basin College and Walla Walla Community College women's soccer teams again produced shutout victories against their opponents in NWAACC friendly competitions conducted Thursday at Starfire Sports soccer complex in Tukwila.
Andrea Roeder scored in the 54th minute for CBC in a 1-0 win over Tacoma, and Kaylie Winston scored three goals for WWCC in a 4-0 trouncing of Highline.
Kathryn Knowlton also scored for the Warriors, who opened the friendlies on Wednesday with a 5-0 win over Bellevue.

PASCO -- When former Columbia Basin College volleyball coach Jon Killingbeck resigned just 26 days before the start of the season, the program could've been thrown into chaos.
Thanks to the team captains and their new head coach, disaster was averted.
"It was very stressful, especially for the freshmen," sophomore captain Kelsey Solberg said. "We had a few (freshmen) quit. A lot was put on the captains' shoulders. ... I called them all to see if they had any questions and just to check in on them."
