Kennewick inn to offer holiday meal for needy

By Kristi Pihl, Herald staff writer

KENNEWICK -- The Clover Island Inn is taking feeding the hungry to a new level.

The inn plans to open its doors from 4 to 8 p.m. Nov. 25 to offer a free Thanksgiving dinner to those who otherwise might not have one.

The goal is to serve 500 to 750 people, said Mark Blotz, Clover Island Inn general manager and partner. Absolutely no money will change hands, he said.

The inn has both the space and the food to offer the meal, Blotz said.

One of its vendors, Sysco, is donating some of the food.

Although the inn had a profitable year, it's been a tough year for many in the community, Blotz said. The dinner is a chance to give those in need a Thanksgiving meal on the evening before the Nov. 26 holiday.

It's the first year that the inn has offered a free Thanksgiving dinner.

Blotz said enough of the staff volunteered to prepare and serve the meal.

Cook Adan Mendoza said he decided to participate because he felt it was a chance to give back to the community.

"I like helping out people as much as I can," he said.

He thought providing a holiday meal for those who can't otherwise afford one was a good idea.

The inn is offering what Blotz calls a "traditional buffet Thanksgiving dinner," including turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, gravy and assorted vegetables.

To help with planning, Blotz requested that those planning to attend RSVP by calling 509-586-0541.

The inn is at 435 Clover Island Drive in Kennewick.
