SALT LAKE CITY -- For once, the Washington Huskies won a football game without going down to the last series, the last snap or the last heartbeat.
Sure, there have been easier wins in Washington football history, but the Huskies' 31-14 win over Utah in their first visit to Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday was a welcome reprieve from the seemingly endless run of anxiety-filled endings that have become a weekly tradition.
How decisive was it? Utah fans were filing out of their own homecoming with six minutes to go -- not a common thing for the Utes, who were playing their first Pac-12 home game.

PULLMAN -- There is almost no way Washington State could have come closer to a winning touchdown with less than 20 seconds left at a snow-covered Martin Stadium on Saturday.
But an inch or a foot or a yard makes no difference when the clock is winding down, so the Cougars settled for a tying field goal and eventually fell in overtime to Utah 30-27 before a thoroughly entertained -- and drenched -- crowd of 16,419.
It was Coleman Petersen’s 38-yard field goal that made it official, but WSU’s slim bowl hopes died in the waning seconds of regulation and its only overtime possession.

Halfway through the Pac-12 football regular season, the physical grind is mounting on a lot of teams.
That's in addition to the ones who were struck early by key injuries, like Arizona State, Utah and Washington State.
Oregon, already having lost LaMichael James for an indefinite period, saw quarterback Darron Thomas go down Saturday night against ASU. No word on his knee going forward, since the Ducks shield such information like the CIA guards intelligence on al-Qaida strongholds.
