Mt. Spokane halfway home

By Rene Ferran, Herald staff writer

KENNEWICK -- If you're a volleyball player from Spokane, you know the tradition you have to uphold.

Mead, with its seven state titles. Lewis & Clark. Shadle Park.

In all, Greater Spokane League teams have won 18 state titles between them.

Mount Spokane is looking to join that list this weekend.

The Wildcats, making only their third appearance all-time in their 11-year history, are halfway to the 3A crown after winning two matches Friday at the state tournament at Toyota Center.

Mount Spokane defeated Timberline 25-21, 24-26, 25-16, 25-13 and Capital 18-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-11 to reach today's semifinals, where the Wildcats will play Prairie.

Can the Wildcats join their sister school, Mead, which outlasted Capital in five sets in the 4A final, and make it a sweep for the Mead School District?

"We'd like to be up there with them," said sophomore Annie Arnzen, who had 17 kills in the Capital match. "They're our rivals, so we want to do as well as them."

Prairie, which knocked off Sea-King district champion Seattle Prep 15-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-20 in its quarterfinal, is all too aware of the Spokane volleyball legacy.

"Spokane comes out with a lot of good volleyball players," said senior setter Camryn Irwin. "But so does Brush Prairie."

One such player is Irwin, who signed with the University of Oregon on Wednesday and was the catalyst for the Falcons' comeback with 28 assists and 19 digs against Seattle Prep.

"We picked up our energy, and our passing improved a lot after that first set," Irwin said. "We stayed calm yet very intense at the same time and played as a team."

The long day at Toyota Center stretched past midnight before the final two 3A semifinalists were determined.

Bishop Blanchet reached the semifinals for the fourth straight year with a 25-21, 27-29, 25-16, 25-20 victory over Meadowdale, while in the final match of the day, Mount Si outlasted Camas 10-25, 25-20, 19-25, 26-24, 15-12.

"I would not want to be on the losing team right now," said Blanchet senior Summer Nash, a San Diego State signee who had 29 kills against Meadowdale. "We probably would not have slept if we had lost."
