A 16-year-old girl already locked up in the juvenile detention center on a burglary charge is now facing additional charges after she tried to escape and assaulted an officer, police said.
Kennewick police were called to the detention center Saturday after the teen had to be sprayed with pepper spray and attacked a corrections officer, police said.
The girl was taken to the booking area to be looked at by a nurse after telling staff she felt ill, but when the nurse determined she was faking her illness, she was placed into a temporary holding cell until she could be taken back to her cell, police said.
The holding cell wasn't locked properly and the teen escaped into the booking area, police said.
She reportedly was found hiding behind a stack of mattresses in the booking area, dressed in her street clothes.
She apparently refused to put her jail clothing back on and attacked a corrections officer after being sprayed with pepper spray, police said.
When Kennewick officers arrived, she was back in custody.
The teen is now facing additional charges of attempted escape, second-degree assault, obstructing police, resisting arrest and felony harassment.
