Gay marriage, health care
Gay marriage, health care
Gay marriage is now favored by our governor and some legislators on the basis of equal rights. As I have stated before, gays have equal rights. I can't marry a person of the same sex, neither can they. That's equal!
Mike Lawrence's In Focus column on Jan. 1 favored the new health care legislation. Perhaps he should wait until it takes effect, discovers its content, then tell us how he favors it! We are in for a rude awakening when and if the health care act becomes effective. We elderly have already experienced some results of the health care act with the dumping of our Hanford site insurance.
Making an appeal for health care legislation in this country based upon an experience in another country is wrong, unless they have identical health care laws.
Health care costs
Health care costs
Why is health care out of reach for American families? Our life expectancy is higher than ever before thanks to the wonderful advances in technology. I am thankful for great health care providers and accept appropriate increases in health care overheads. However, I cannot accept the suggestion that this is why the cost of medical insurance moves further and further out of reach for more and more Americans.
Insurance premiums take a jump and so does the company CEO's salary since compensation is based on the company's earnings. United Health Group, the top health insurance company's CEO, tops the pay scale in America at over $94 million in total compensation in 2010. His compensation in 2008 was a little over $13 million. There is a long list of insurance company CEOs who received comparable compensation.

Look at health care through experience
The Washington State Insurance Commissioner recently reported that more than 1 million Washington residents do not have health insurance.
As a consequence, Tri-City hospitals provided $53.1 million in unpaid health care in 2010. Despite this situation, all Republican presidential candidates have vowed the repeal of the Affordable Care Act, derisively referred to as Obamacare, primarily due to its mandate for all citizens to carry health insurance.
It is widely accepted that the cost of health care in general, and Medicare and Medicaid in particular, are rising at an unsustainable rate, but there is strong opposition to any change in these popular programs.

Officials say flu season begun in Grant County
Grant County health officials reported Friday that flu season officially has arrived.
The county's health district has received 13 reports of positive influenza lab tests, and believe that may indicate a wider spread flu outbreak.
"While 13 positive tests may not seem like many, health care providers are not required to report all positive flu tests," said Shawta Sackett, community public health manager and epidemiologist. "Not every patient who is seen in a clinic for flu will be tested and we know many people do not visit their health care provider when they are sick with the flu."
