SPOKANE -- There was nothing particularly fancy about Southridge's offensive attack.
Quarterback Stephen Garcia either handed it off to Dallin Palmer or he kept it.
But the Mead defense could not get a handle on them for a half and fell 14-10 on Friday night in a state play-in football game at Joe Albi Stadium.
The duo combined for 32 carries and 161 yards in the first half.
"The kids really played well, and defense did what they've done all year," said Suns coach Andy Troxel. "Offensively, we made mistakes early but made the big plays when we needed to. Our kids were resilient and didn't collapse when they made mistakes. They bounced back and played hard for four quarters."
The Suns play at Eisenhower in the first round of the state playoffs next week.
Southridge missed several scoring chances because of turnovers. But the Suns defense more than made up for it.
"We know our defense is that good and won't beat itself," Troxel said. "We put them in bad situations and they responded."
When the Suns were flawless on offense, they proved unstoppable, primarily because of the push of their line at the point of attack, but also because of the shiftiness and speed of 5-foot-10, 155-pound Palmer and the power of 6-3, 206 Garcia.
Following turnovers on their first two series, Palmer and Garcia alternated 11 plays and covered 70 yards to tie the game at 7 four minutes into the second quarter.
Mead responded with Marc David's 33-yard field goal.
At that point, Mead coach Sean Carty thought his team was in good shape.
"We were still managing the game and I thought we'd go into halftime ahead 10-7," he said.
Particularly after Southridge fumbled away the ball at midfield with 3 minutes, 32 seconds left until intermission.
But the Suns got the ball back with 2 minutes left, and Garcia hit Tyrell McGee from 15 yards out for a touchdown in the final minute before the half.
That was the last scoring of the night.
Southridge (8-2) finished with 240 yards, with only 44 of those coming in the second half. Mead had 110 total.
Southridge 0 14 0 0 -- 14
Mead 7 3 0 0 -- 10

There may never again be another six-interception game that features such thrilling quarterback play as Thursday night's tilt between Southridge and Sunnyside.
The Suns rallied from 12 points down, pitching a shutout in the second half and going ahead on Chris Haueter's twisting 5-yard touchdown run -- and Conner Mertens' clutch extra point -- for a 20-19 win over a feisty Grizzlies bunch at Lampson Stadium.
"We remembered two weeks ago in Wenatchee. They were down at the half, and they came out and beat us by one point," said Haueter, who finished with 200 total yards. "We said, 'We have to do this.' "

KENNEWICK -- The touchdown was on his hands, and then it was on the ground, and Josh Richards knew he had just cost his team seven points.
But rather than pout or get down on himself, Southridge's senior play-maker went out and got his team three more scores.
Richards hauled in four balls for 217 yards, accounting for the bulk of Matt Mendenhall's 316 yards passing in the Suns' 31-10 win over the Hanford Falcons in a CBBN 3A contest at Lampson Stadium on Friday night.

KENNEWICK -- Give the Kamiakin Braves your best shot, give them 48 minutes of tough, clean football, and you just might stand toe-to-toe with the fourth-ranked team in the state.
Give them a head of steam and a couple of gifts early in the game, and it's going to be a long night.
Running back Zach Umemoto powered the Braves on a 75-yard drive to open the game, and the Southridge Suns handed them a short field for two more quick scores in a 41-7 CBBN 3A rout Friday night at Lampson Stadium.

KENNEWICK -- Both teams were already locked into the 3A state tournament when Kamiakin and Southridge met Saturday for the regional title at Southridge High School.
Even though both teams had little to lose, however, both sides played like their playoff lives depended on it.
In the end, the Suns pulled out a 3-1 shootout win after a 1-1 tie in regulation, giving Southridge its first regional championship. It was a typical Suns-Braves battle, meaning nothing came easy for either team.

Postseason seeding and a home playoff game on the line, a raucous homecoming crowd to entertain and a heated rival on the other sideline.
The Kennewick Lions picked a perfect game to put forth one of their best efforts.
Grant Woods piled up 162 of Kennewick's 298 yards on the ground, Bryce Leavitt threw for two scores and ran for another, and the Lions' defense turned away two threats in the first half and then turned out the lights in a 35-7 win over the Southridge Suns in a key CBBN 3A contest Friday at Lampson Stadium.
