Flags are being flown at half-staff two days this week in honor of two soldiers killed last week in Afghanistan.
Gov. Chris Gregoire ordered the flags at all state agency buildings be lowered in memory of U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer Niall D. Lyons of Spokane and U.S. Army Private First Class Christopher Walz of Vancouver.
The flags were lowered Wednesday for Lyons. He was killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan.
And Walz, who died when his military vehicle hit an improvised explosive device, is being honored today.

This is in reference to your pet zone page on Nov. 20. I don't know what is more disgusting, someone who would throw the flag on the floor for the dog to lay on or your paper for printing it. It is inappropriate and insensitive to me and all vets who have fought for that flag.

Not cute or funny
Not cute or funny
I know that the pictures in the Pet Zone section of the Sunday paper are supposed to be cute and funny, but as a Vietnam veteran, I don't see anything cute or funny about on picture in the Nov. 20 edition.
First of all, the American flag is lying on the floor, then the dog is sitting on the flag. There is nothing cute or funny about that picture. If the dog's owners are trying to make a political statement with the flag and their dog's name, George W., it is lost on me. I find the picture insulting and ridiculous! The dog's owners should learn flag etiquette, and shame on the Tri-City Herald for printing it.

I was thoroughly disgusted by the total lack of respect for our flag shown in the Tri-City Herald's Pet Zone page on Nov. 20. You at the Herald and the people who submitted the photo thought it was cute to show a picture of their dog sitting on the American flag. People who respect the flag do not let it touch the ground. They most certainly do not put it on the floor and let their dog use it for a rug. Shame on you all!

Not OK

I have always enjoyed the Pet Zone in your Sunday paper, until this week wherein you published a picture of a Jack Russell dog using the American flag for a blanket on the floor to rest, play or whatever on.
Where is it written this is an OK use of our country's flag?
Shame on the dog's owners and shame on the Tri-City Herald for using such a picture.

FLAGS:Gov. Gregoire directs flags lowered to honor soldier
Gov. Chris Gregoire has directed that flags at all Washington state agency buildings be lowered to half-staff today, in memory of U.S. Army Sergeant Alexander J. Bennett of Tacoma. Bennett died Aug. 6th in Afghanistan when the helicopter he was in crashed.
Flags should remain at half-staff until close of business Tuesday, or first thing Wednesday morning, Aug. 17th.
Congress amended the U.S. Flag Code to give governors the authority to lower flags when a state resident in the military is killed in the line of duty. Other government entities, citizens and businesses are encouraged to join in this recognition.
