SEATTLE -- University of Washington basketball coach Lorenzo Romar announced Monday that 6-foot-9 sophomore forward Brendan Sherrer had made the 14th-ranked team as a walk-on.
The Huskies found Sherrer in a walk-on tryout camp held last month while seven of their regular players were out sick.
So many were missing, the team couldn't fully begin practicing until a week after it had planned to.
The 240-pound Sherrer is from Monroe, and played for Archbishop Murphy High School in Everett.
He is the first walk-on to make the team since 2004.

With six days to spend in New York, the Washington men's basketball team crammed everything it could into its schedule.

"For us to spend a week in New York will be a great experience on and off the court," coach Lorenzo Romar said. "For some of these guys, it's their first time in the city.

PASCO -- Chiawana seniors Jordan Downing and Miquiyah Zamora, both named to the Washington 4A all-state football team in the fall, plan to remain teammates at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.
The four-year starters went on a recruiting trip last weekend that all but finalized their decision. The next date for athletes to sign letters of intent is Feb. 1.
"It's not official, but it's really solid. It came down to Western Oregon and Eastern, but Eastern gave me a chance to play as a true freshman," said Zamora, a three-time all-CBBN defensive back who will play safety with the Eagles. "I'm just happy I get to prove myself to people that I belong at a Division I program."

Eastern Washington University has already proved its football program is on the right track, winning a Football Championship Subdivision national title in 2009.
Today the Eagles will officially grab three of the top impact football players out of the Columbia Basin Big Nine conference.
Miquiyah Zamora of Chiawana and Joe Hunt of Kamiakin will sign on the dotted line during today's National Signing Day. They'll join several other Mid-Columbia athletes who will continue their athletic career at the next level.

SEATTLE -- The second-to-last recruiting weekend of the season for the Washington Huskies yielded one firm commitment and an awful lot of rumors, innuendo and speculation.
The commitment came from fullback Psalm Wooching of Kalakehe High in Kailua Kona, Hawaii, who was one of five recruits to visit Washington this weekend.
None of the others, including offensive lineman Jake Eldrenkamp of Bellevue, was reported to have committed.

PULLMAN -- When your redshirt freshman quarterback throws for a Pac-12 record 494 yards, even an experienced coach like Paul Wulff, not one to praise individuals over team, has to express his admiration.
"Yeah, it did. There is no question," he was impressed, Wulff said Sunday of Connor Halliday's performance in Washington State's 37-27 upset win over Arizona State at Martin Stadium.
"The other part of it was the receivers making the plays for him as well."
