Elk hunter accidentally shoots himself in leg

By the Herald staff

YAKIMA -- An elk hunter shot himself in the lower leg when he apparently slipped while walking in Yakima County on Saturday evening, according to the Yakima County Sheriff's Office.

The 68-year-old man from Colfax was hunting a half-mile east of Fish Creek Road south of Rimrock Lake. His gun discharged when he slipped as he walked across slick, clay-type mud on uneven terrain, according to police reports.

He used a radio to call his hunting partners. Hunters in the area and emergency personnel carried him out on a litter to an Advanced Life Systems ambulance. He was transferred to a helicopter standing by at the Tieton emergency airstrip to be flown to a Yakima hospital.

His name was not released.
