Teach the children
Teach the children
I live close to a place where they bring a lot of children in and out. As the parents come in and leave, some of them speed, throw trash out of the windows and run stop signs. Also on one entrance, they are trespassing, speeding and playing loud music. Now as small children are learning how to get along in the world and eager to learn, it would seem to me that the parent is teaching them to break the law. What kind of parent really wants to teach their children to break the law or hurt them or someone else by running stop signs or speeding? You might want to think about this while going to church or taking your children to classes. Safe driving is a good thing to teach your children. I think everyone would agree with this. How about you? Children watch what you do and learn from it.

Rosary beads
Rosary beads
Just like Marie Schultz said (Letters, Sept. 19), rosary beads are not worn as necklaces for religious purpose. They are held in your hand, and each of the beads you hold while you say a prayer. There are different prayers for different beads. For the young man and his family to suggest he was wearing them for religious purposes is an insult to the Catholic faith. Rules are rules and for some to hide their gang affiliation behind rosary beads is wrong. Why aren't the parents supporting the school rules? Where I grew up, the school and parents communicated with each other and were on the same side. Now parents are telling their children it's OK to break the rules, ignore rules of conduct and disrespect authority. Didn't a teacher just get killed by gang members there a couple of years ago? I can see why there is a no-tolerance policy.

Gay marriage
Gay marriage
In response to Michael Scrimsher's Jan. 18 letter.
First of all, I too disagree with many of Gov. Chris Gregiore's decisions and can't wait to see her out of office, but I agree with her decision to allow gay marriage. I see no harm in it.
Scrimsher brings up the fact that it is nonbeneficial to the country for same sex couples to marry since procreation isn't possible. Every year, many children from infant to teen are given up for adoption because their heterosexual parents weren't ready to be parents, or they abused their right as parents by abusing their children. Many of these children never get adopted by loving parents.
