What happened to Clive Owen?
The once-upon-a-time-gonna-be James Bond’s star is fading. Owen is an exceptional actor stuck in flicks such as the spy clunkers The International and Duplicity, and now The Boys are Back.

On paper this is a great, three-hanky movie. A widower deals with the shocking loss of his wife while balancing his job with raising a very young boy and reconnecting with an estranged son.
In between, he's negotiating his way through a relationship with the now ex-in-laws and a beautiful neighbor.
Turned to reality, Scott Hick’s (Shine) film drags. Owen isn’t the least bit sympathetic, you don’t like either kid and The Boys are Back ends up as an overly long, tiresome whinefest.

Rated PG-13 for mature themes. It opens Friday, Oct. 30 at the Carmike 12.

4 stars to 3 1/2 stars: Good film, see it if it's your type of movie.
