Southridge High presents 'Alice in Wonderland'

Get ready to dive down the rabbit hole when Southridge High School presents Alice in Wonderland as its first play of the 2009-10 theater season.

The Queen of Hearts will be there, along with the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the March Hare, Cheshire Cat and Alice, of course.

The show opens at 7 p.m. Nov. 5 with more performances Nov. 7, 12 and 14. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens. Tickets are sold at the door.

Though Josh Darby is making his debut as Southridge High's new theater director, he's no stranger to the school.

"This is my first teaching experience (with a school) and I am excited because it is the high school I graduated from in 2003," Darby said.

He has some new plans for the school's drama department and credits his predecessor Barbara Wilson, who still heads the department, for her help.

"The students have made this transition easier by their willingness to try new things," Darby said. "And Barb Wilson has been an amazing help to me as well."

The Southridge production of Alice in Wonderland is adapted from the classic Lewis Carroll tale with a few changes tossed in to give it some local flavor, Darby said.

"Out story is told as if it is children telling the story at a small child's birthday party," he said.

He was helped with his adaptation by local theater professionals Ginny Quinley, Linda Hoffman, Julie Schroeder, Russ Wodehouse and Nick Wagoner.

Southridge High drama students playing the lead characters are Kelsey Hilmes, 16, as Alice; Courtney May, 16, as Red Queen; Tim Rinehart, 17, as Mad Hatter; Orma Raindranath, 16, as March Hare; Ann Archer, 16, as White Rabbit; Max Lembeck, 17, as Cheshire Cat; Jenny Linde, 17, as The Duchess; and Chris Sears and Andrew Morton, both 17, as Tweedledum and Tweedledee.
