The dog of a Richland family involved in a tragic crash Sunday has died after being hit by a car.
A friend of Audrey and Matthew Ulrich went to the scene of the accident near Wapato on Tuesday in search of Lula, a 9-month-old German shorthair mix.
She was seen Sunday about 500 yards from the family's wrecked SUV but then went missing.
Audrey Ulrich, 34, and her 2-year-old son Rafael died from injuries suffered when their SUV crashed into some trees along Interstate 82.
Her husband, Matthew, 38, remained Tuesday at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital in stable condition.
His 4-month-old son Xavier and the children's grandmother, Marie Martinez, 67, are no longer at the hospital.
Officials with the state Department of Transportation called a family friend Tuesday afternoon to report sightings of Lula still running in the area of the crash.
But by the time the friend arrived Lula had been hit by a car and died before a vet in Zillah could help her.
Audrey and Matthew Ulrich have owned The Barking Lot Pet Grooming in Richland since 1999, and Audrey Ulrich was president of the Tri-City Dog Park Society.
Troopers still are trying to figure out what caused the couple's Explorer to drift into the median before Audrey Ulrich overcorrected, causing the SUV to roll and smash into the trees about 3:45 p.m. Sunday near Wapato.
