Food for Thought: Kid, teen carvers get spotlight in contest

By Loretto J. Hulse, Herald staff writer

Whether you like spooky pumpkins or funny ones, prefer them painted rather than carved -- they all have a chance to win at the 14th annual Pumpkin Contest at the Pasco Farmers Market on Oct. 31.

The contest, which is open to youthful artists only, has two categories: ages 12 and under; and 13 to 17 years old. Prizes will go to the winners in each category. Plus there will be a prize for the smallest and largest pumpkins.

All entrants will receive a goodie bag.

Registration is required by Oct. 28. Pick up entry forms at the market on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon or at any Tri-City area SunMart, Griggs Department Store in Pasco and either of the two Richland Ace Hardware Stores.

Entries will be accepted from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Oct. 31 at the market site at 4th Avenue and Columbia Street in Pasco. Pumpkins must be decorated and ready for judging.

The awards ceremony is at 11:30 a.m. For more information, call 509-531-7274.
