It's been a couple of weeks since I've been down to the rink for practice. With the team on the road, my son's football games and having to whittle my vacation days down by mid-December, it leaves little time to watch the Americans work on their power play.
I had a few spare minutes Tuesday and took a trip to Toyota Center to catch the end of practice. First thing I noticed were the new practice jerseys, complete with matching socks. The defensemen wore their typical black, the goalies wore white and the forward lines were dressed in powder blue, green, gray, red and orange. They've had their new duds for a couple of weeks and the players seem to like them.
The socks are not made from your typical sweater knit material. They are similar to the jersey and do not soak up water from the ice when the players kneel down or go sliding across the ice. The old socks could soak up a lot of water by the end of practice.
Practices are open to the public. If you have a spare minute or two, stop in and check out the action.

Washington State Patrol troopers have closed both Tacoma Narrows bridges this afternoon because of large ice chunks falling onto the bridge deck.
It’s not immediately clear when drivers will be allowed back across the two spans.
Trooper Guy Gill reports that the state Department of Transportation will be doing an assessment of the bridges. Once that is done, crews will have an idea of when the bridges will reopen.

Letter from a soldier in 1917
This story is one of many "letters home" written by young men who left home for the "Great War." The Prosser Republican-Bulletin published many of them from former local residents to the delight of their readers. I was amazed at how well they could write. Remember, this was a handwritten letter.
