SEATTLE -- Third-base coach Bruce Hines is the only Seattle Mariners coach not returning in 2010.
Hines, 51, was told last week that he wasn't being retained, although neither general manager Jack Zduriencik nor manager Don Wakamatsu has yet discussed the firing -- or the reasoning behind it -- other than to say they wanted to go in a "different direction."
The team extended bench coach Ty Van Burkleo, pitching coach Rick Adair, batting coach Alan Cockrell, first base/outfield coach Lee Tinsley and bullpen coach John Wetteland.
Hines, who worked with Mariners infielders in 2009, is the son of former Seattle coach Ben Hines. He was, he said, "absolutely devastated" by the decision.

TOUCHET -- Most of the Touchet football players are too young to remember when the tiny town routinely pumped out state championship caliber teams.
It has been a decade since the Indians last made a Class 1B title game and four years since they were in the playoffs, but that hasn't stopped Touchet from dreaming about a run this season.
"These kids have never really experienced anything like that," Touchet coach Gary Dorman said. "This is a whole new ballgame. The excitement and the nerves, all those emotions wrapped up, they are really having a lot of fun right now."

Anyone who is a fan of Washington State University football and even those who aren't will want to spend 24 minutes to hear
Ian Furness' interview Tuesday on KJR 950 AM with Jim Walden.
Walden, analyst for WSU football's radio broadcast and a former WSU head coach, gave an impassioned plea for the school to stay the course with Paul Wulff as head coach of the Cougars.
Furness, a WSU grad and former voice of the Tri-City Americans, asked Walden for his thoughts regarding Wulff and his coaching staff after WSU's demoralizing 44-21 loss in Seattle to lowly Oregon State. (The Beavs didn't punt until the final minute of the game.)
