RICHLAND -- A free public presentation on the chemistry of beer and ale is planned for 6 p.m. Monday at the Battelle Auditorium in Richland.
Mark Thomson, a chemistry professor from Ferris State University in Michigan, will discuss the role of chemistry in the development of regional styles of beer and ale and how each step affects the final product's color, bitterness, aroma and taste.

The public is invited to attend a lecture by Italian computational scientist Michele Parrinello on Tuesday at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.
In his technical talk, "Proteins in Motion," Parrinello will discuss how studying a protein's structure can expand our understanding of how proteins operate and work. He will focus on the computational chemistry technique of metadynamics.
Parrinello is a professor of computational sciences at ETH in Zurich, Switzerland, and a professor of computational chemistry at Scoula Normale in Pisa, Italy.

WSU Tri-Cities to honor region's chemists Friday
Washington State University Tri-Cities is sponsoring a reception to celebrate the region's chemists and chemistry students.
The free event will begin at 5 p.m. Friday in the West Building Atrium on WSU Tri-Cities' campus, 2710 Crimson Way in Richland.
Chemists who were recently designated as fellows by the American Chemical Society will be honored, as well as 50- and 60-year members.
