Coming off back-to-back elite invitationals and with district races a week away, most of the Tri-City schools will be dialing back their workouts.
Today will see the end of this season's CBBN races -- with Southridge and Kamiakin hosting the league's teams.
With no invites on the schedule this weekend, the next time the area's big-school competitors will be on the course will be next Thursday at the 4A and 3A district meets at Walla Walla Point Park in Wenatchee and at Hanford, respectively.
On Oct. 30, the regional championships are slated for Wandermere Golf Course in Spokane, moved up a day from the traditional Saturday start because of a golf tournament scheduled for Halloween.
"Typically, you start to back off this week," said Kamiakin boys coach Matt Rexus. "Each coach is different -- you might cut back the miles or the intensity."
Of course, it also depends on the team's goal.
Most have their hands full just qualifying for state, so they want to be at their best for regionals.
But those teams that expect to have an easier time being among the top teams at regionals -- such as the third-ranked Kamiakin boys or the No. 4 Richland girls -- might push hard this week before letting up, hoping to hit their peak for state.
"We're going to try to push a week or so longer than we normally do," Rexus said, "just because we feel if we are fortunate to be healthy and make it to state, we don't want to be backing off so early as to be totally stale when we make the state meet."
