After a night of partying, Richland resident Mike Wingfield wasn't sure what to make of the artwork that mysteriously appeared in his front yard overnight.
Wingfield surveyed the piece Saturday afternoon with friends Shan Belew and Jen Heineman.
"It looks like a giant vagina," Wingfield said with a bewildered look on his face. "I'm just totally amazed."
The 5-foot-plus sculpture looks like a surfboard with an oval cutout in the center, replaced with a piece of clouded glass. It's made of hard plaster and stands on a square base.
Wingfield estimates it weighs close to 100 pounds.
After finding the object Saturday morning, Wingfield feared it could have been stolen from a local boutique or mistakenly placed in his yard -- it was accompanied by an unsigned birthday card.
"My birthday is in May," the 53-year-old quipped.
Just in case, Wingfield called the police. He said two officers arrived in separate cars.
As they stepped out of their cruisers, "one cop looks at the other and says, 'You owe me lunch,' " Wingfield said, chuckling. "They were just laughing their butts off."
"They're just going to leave it here until somebody claims it," Wingfield said.
Wingfield joked he might put it on Craigslist, while Belew proposed cordoning it behind velvet ropes and charging passers-by 50 cents to take a photo next to it. Heineman offered suggestions for how Wingfield could use it on Halloween.
Wingfield's wife, Linda, who declined to talk about the mysterious artwork, was less than amused with its presence.
"She wants it out of here," Wingfield said.
Until someone claims it, or his wife forces him to haul it to the dump, Wingfield's going to embrace the oddity.
"It's got to improve the (property value)," he said.

PULLMAN -- Washington State quarterback Marshall Lobbestael is not ready to get too excited about his team putting up 123 points on its first two opponents.
In beating UNLV 59-7 on Saturday and Idaho State 64-21 a week ago, the Cougars dominated two overmatched opponents.
"The next couple of weeks will pose real tough games for us," said Lobbestael, who threw for career highs of 361 yards and five touchdowns on Saturday.

Downing not left out in Chiawana win
As tough as it was for Chiawana to play without 4A all-state running back Jordan Downing, it was even more difficult for the four-year starter to watch his team from the sidelines during the Riverhawks' 28-0 win over Davis on Friday in Pasco.
"It was killing me," said Downing, who had racked up 954 yards and 12 touchdowns on 137 carries -- a seven yard average -- in six games before a spiral fracture of his right fibula ended his season. "It just tears me apart inside not to be out there. I love these guys."
The feeling is mutual. That much was evident when Downing led them onto the turf at Edgar Brown Stadium before the game. Surrounded by his teammates decked out in royal blue uniforms minutes before kickoff, he delivered a few emotional words of inspiration.

His first pass in relief of Marshall Lobbestael -- on WSU's third possession -- went for an 85-yard touchdown to Marquess Wilson.
