HERMISTON -- Mid-Columbia auto racing fans can get in one last race to watch this year when the Northwest Sprint Car Invitational will be held today at Columbia Motor Speedway in Hermiston.
Qualifying starts at 1 p.m., while the 50-lap race begins at 2 p.m.
The event will pit drivers of the Inland Northwest Sprint Car Association (INSCA), the Washington Econo Sprint Car Organization (WESCO), the ERP Winged Sprint Cars and the WILROC series of Canada against each other.
The winner receives a $1,200 check and regional bragging rights heading in to the long winter.
Of the 25 drivers preregistered, area drivers include Justin Mack from the Tri-Cities, and Othello's Mike Fought and Donnie Kudrna.

The format for this race is unchanged from last year, but there is a tweak in the eligibility requirements. Drivers finishing among the top-25 in the Sprint Cup point standings this past season as well as active drivers who are not in the top-25 but previously won the Budweiser Shootout, the Daytona 500 or the 400-mile July race at Daytona are eligible.

I noticed a rather sizeable error in the Oct. 23-29, 2011, On Screen magazine that comes with our Sunday Tri-City Herald.
On Page 5 there is a very nicely written and concise "player profile" article by George Dickie. The article shows a photo of a handsome young NASCAR driver with a short biography of Kevin Michael Harvick across the top of the photo. At the bottom of the photo it states in big bold letters, "Harvick hopes to catch a fortuitous draft at Talladega."
The problem with all of this is the photo is not of Kevin Harvick who drives the number 29 NASCAR Sprint Cup car for Richard Childress Racing.
