Students at Columbia Basin College in Pasco head back to their classrooms Monday -- and they're walking onto a campus that in several ways has changed during the past few months.
State budget cuts earlier this summer prompted CBC to cut some of its offerings effective this school year. Since then, the state board governing two-year colleges has declared a financial emergency and state government officials have put CBC on notice to trim its current budget by as much as 10 percent.
This may mean cutting another entire program, after already taking away some during the summer.

Families keep their faith in private schools in Tri-Cities
Shawna Durham says pulling her two youngest children from St. Joseph's, a private Catholic school in Kennewick, was one of the options she and her husband considered when the recession hit and her family's budget tightened.
But both of her children pleaded with her to not move them from the school.
The school was their family, they told her and husband Doug, a manager at Areva. They decided to let their kids remain at St. Joe's, and the family made other cuts to their spending.

2 Carmichael students chosen as semifinalists
Two Carmichael Middle School students have been selected as semifinalists for the Broadcom Masters Science competition.
The Richland students, Shanta Katipamula (grade 8) and Swetha Shutthanandan (grade 7), have a chance to be one of 30 finalists, who will be named Aug. 31.
If chosen, they will receive an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C., to attend the finals. Finalists will compete for a share of more than $100,000 in prizes.
