Benton City keeps vigil for well-known volunteer

By the Herald staff

BENTON CITY -- A well-known Benton City businessman and community volunteer is in a coma following a massive heart attack.

About 50 family members and friends from Benton City were keeping vigil for Joe Petty at Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland on Thursday night.

He suffered a massive heart attack Monday after coaching a youth football practice, said Randy Rutledge, Benton City Economic Development Council coordinator.

Petty, 37, owns CJ Plastics in Benton City. He has helped organize many community events and is on several boards.

Rutledge said several fundraisers are planned to help Petty's family. Petty is married and has two young children.

An account has been set up at U.S. Bank in Benton City to assist with his medical bills.
