KENNEWICK Hastings Books, Music & Videos in Kennewick appears headed to a new location.
The company didn't renew its lease for the store at 151 N. Ely St., near Highway 395, the Herald recently learned. The space is listed as available on the Web site of Judith Homewood, a commercial real estate agent with Coldwell Banker.
Hastings' lease runs out Dec. 31, Homewood said. A new tenant will move in after the space is remodeled, she said. The tenant also is leasing adjacent space for a total of about 45,000 square feet, Homewood said.
That the new tenant is Gold's Gym, which recently advertised for employees in the Herald. The listed lease price for the Hastings' location, which has 36,767 square feet, is $30,640 a month.
Jay Bates, an executive consultant with Synergy Fitness Group in Idaho, is helping the Gold's franchise owner set up business in the strip mall. He said Gold's initially will set up in a smaller location adjacent to Hastings and then move into the bigger space when it becomes available.
Homewood confirmed the tenant will first occupy 3,600 square feet at 109 N. Ely St., which leases for $4,800 monthly, according to her Web site.
Calls to Hastings' corporate headquarters in Amarillo, Texas, were not immediately returned. But an employee at Hastings' Richland store confirmed the company is not renewing its Kennewick lease.
But that doesn't mean the store is closing down, said the employee, who didn't want to be identified. The company has been looking at other locations, the employee said, and may consider building a new building.
Jeff Kossow, Kennewick economic development director, said he heard almost two months ago from a third-party about Hastings' search for a new location. "I have no reason to believe (Kennewick Hastings') business is suffering," he said.
Generally, businesses are reluctant to talk of a search for a new location for fear it may boost rental costs, Kossow said. "We encourage them to stay in the Tri-Cities."
