Seeing 1975s Barry Lyndon again reminded me that skills such as those possessed by writer/director Stanley Kubrick are rare.
Only a handful of directors live in that league. Kubrick died in 1999 just before the release of Eyes Wide Shut. What blows my mind is the impact Kubrick had on the industry considering he didnt make that many movies. Kubrick did just 16 in 48 years and only three in the last 19 years of his life.
But those three were incredible. The cinematography, the stories, the acting and the larger-than-life presentation makes Kubricks 16 some of the most amazing movies ever done.
Barry Lyndon stars Ryan ONeal as the 18th centurys Redmond Barry, who struggles to live the life of a nobleman. Believing hes entitled to a title, Barry has no values or morals and will do whatever is necessary to get there.
The story is pretty good. The real appeal are the sets, locations, the award-winning cinematography and costumes. They overwhelm ONeal and the acting of his co-stars. That makes Stanley Kubrick the real star of Barry Lyndon. Enjoy this one. Its a treat on a big screen.

Rated PG though it does have nudity. It plays Friday, September 25 only at 8 p.m. at the Battelle Auditorium in Richland.

Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams play characters Leo and Paige. Their story and that of the real life couple the film is modeled after have little in common. Married, careers on the upswing, he produces music and she’s an artist growing in fame. And they are very, very happy.

The Hedgehog is a subtitled French film from 2009 that finally got released in the U.S. last year, and thanks to the Battelle Film Club , it will be seen in the Tri-Cities.
The story centers around Paloma, an 11-year old girl whose interests are philosophy and art.
No one in her family can relate. Her parents barely speak to each other much less to Paloma. The disconnected mom talks to plants, and the psychiatrist but can’t talk to her daughter. Dad is nowhere to be found.
