KENNEWICK -- Botanist Steven Link will talk about native plants of the Columbia Basin at the September meeting of the Lower Columbia Basin Audubon Society at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Kennewick.
The event is at Kennewick First Lutheran Church, at the corner of Yelm and Highway 395.
Link will discuss invasive species, ecological restoration and xeriscaping for the home using native plants.

Quail Forever to hold preseason banquet
PASCO -- The Columbia Basin chapter of Quail Forever will have its third annual preseason banquet Oct. 3 at the Holiday Inn Express at TRAC in Pasco.
The banquet begins at 5:30 p.m. with a happy hour, followed by a prime rib buffet dinner, a "state of the covey" update and a silent auction.
There also will be drawings for prints, firearms and more.

The Columbia Basin chapter of Quail Forever is the only one west of Colorado and the only one dedicated to improve habitat for California Valley and mountain quail in Washington, according to the nonprofit conservation group.
Anderson named Fish and Wildlife director
OLYMPIA -- Phil Anderson has been named permanent director of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife after serving as interim director for nine months.
The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission selected Anderson after narrowing the field to two finalists last month.
Commission members said they sought a director with a strong conservation ethic, sound fiscal-management and leadership skills and expertise in intergovernmental relations.
Anderson replaces Jeff P. Koenings, who left the job last year.

Meeting to address water needs in Columbia Basin
An almost completed forecast of the long-term need for water in the Columbia Basin and where it will come from will be discussed Wednesday in Richland.
The Washington State Department of Ecology is developing the 20-year forecast with assistance from Washington State University and the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife.
"For the first time, we'll have a comprehensive evaluation of what our water needs will be in the Columbia Basin," said Derek Sandison, who heads the Department of Ecology Office of the Columbia River. "This report provides a blueprint for how we invest in water supply projects."

BURBANK -- Several federal agencies are helping to celebrate National Public Lands Day on Saturday at the Hood Park Nature Area.
The Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service and Bureau of Reclamation are seeking volunteers to assist in making visitor improvements to the area, located at the intersection of highways 12 and 124.
Registration is at 9 a.m. Projects planned include building a trail from the campground to the nature area and a litter patrol.
