SUNNYSIDE -- The second biggest city in Yakima County is gearing up for its second biggest community festival of the year.
Sunnysides Sunshine Days will be Sept. 18-20 in Central Park.
A parade, carnival, live music, vendors and the annual Soapbox Derby are on tap.
The crowds it attracts downtown may be smaller than those of the citys largest event, Cinco de Mayo. But Sunshine Days is the citys oldest and most evolved festival, dating back to the 1920s or earlier. Its been called Fete Days and Ford Days (when it was sponsored by a Ford dealership.) Its also been held in June and on the Fourth of July.
A carnival through Sept. 20 afternoon will anchor the entertainment in Central Park.
However, the parade is the main highlight.
It will wind its way through downtown starting at 10 a.m. Saturday. Teri Alvarez-Ziegler, a longtime Sunnyside High School teacher and the head chaperone for the Miss Sunnyside Court, will be this years grand marshal.
The Miss Sunnyside Pageant will be at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Sunnyside High School auditorium. Eleven girls are vying for the title.
Live musical performers will take the Central Park stage both Friday and Saturday, while the 11th annual Soapbox Derby will begin at noon Saturday on the Grant Street hill, just south of the park.
For something a little more stationary, theres a quilt show that runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 19 and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 20 at the Johnson Concentrate building, north of the park across Edison Street.

Six teens associated with gang activity, including two involving firearms, were arrested by Sunnyside police in the past three days.
Officers responded to a call early Saturday in the 400 block of West Maple Avenue when a parent found a boy in her daughter's room and was unable to get him to leave.
When police responded, officers reportedly found a 14-year-old who was a suspect in an incident at Central Park earlier in the day. The suspect was allegedly brandishing a firearm at his sister's boyfriend. The 15-year-old girl claimed ownership of the pistol and both were arrested on suspicion of unlawful possession a firearm, police said.

The 86th annual States Day celebration in Prosser is Sept. 5.
Festivities begin at 10 a.m. with a parade that winds through the streets of downtown Prosser. Events continue at City Park on Seventh Street with food, bingo, a dunk tank and carnival. At 1 p.m., 10 finalists compete in The Valley's Got Talent contest on the Sylvan Stage.

Outdoors briefs: Parks visitors can skip Discover Pass on Jan. 14-16
OLYMPIA -- Visitors to Washington parks will be admitted without Discover Passes Jan. 14-16, the three-day weekend ending with Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
It is the first of 10 state park "free days" scheduled this year. Other days are March 18 and 19; June 9; Sept. 29 and Nov. 10 to 12.
A Discover Pass still will be required for Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and Department of Natural Resources land those days.
