Is irony at work here or what?
Two controversial films based on excellent short features are released in the same year and both have the number nine in their titles. And both should have remained critically-acclaimed short films because neither has enough substance to be a full-length motion-picture.
The irony continues. Both Shane Acker who does 9 and District 9s Neill Blomkamp are rising digital animation stars whose first solo efforts are iffy at best.
Ackers 9 was released on Wednesday. Who can resist sending 9 out in 09-09-09? District 9 has earned more than $100 million and is still packing them in at the box office.
9 is set in the future where intelligent machines are created to serve. Something goes wrong. Perverted by a Big Brother-like dictator, the machines rebel and go to war with humans and destroy us all. Whats left of humanity is found in the souls of tiny gunny sack toy figures numbered one through nine. They too are hunted by the machines.
Number 9 is the last to wake up. He finds a special button identified by #2 as something very important. A flying insect-like machine grabs #2 and the button and flies off to a giant factory. Eventually all of the toy creatures follow and there they get clues as to what happened to humanity, their purpose and their fate.
The much-bragged about animation techniques are as mortal as the wiped out humans. They are nothing special, and neither is Ackers story and Monster House co-writer Pamela Pettlers additional scripting.
9 is The Terminator on ritalin. It is loaded with adult themes but really aimed at kids. And more irony here it is the perfect flick for a nine-year old boy.
Mr. Movie rating: 2 1/2 stars
Rated PG-13 for mature themes and some frightening scenes. It opened Wednesday, Sept. 9 at the Carmike 12.

Every year, there is one picture that if not for one other picture would be everyone’s pick for the year’s best.
This film would win awards in almost every category from the slew of groups that give awards.
This year, that movie is The Descendants .

'The Thing' among those things to be left alone
Mary Elizabeth Winstead ( Scott Pilgrim vs. The World ) is Kate Lloyd, a paleontologist asked to accompany a not-so mad-acting mad scientist on an expedition to Antarctica.
They’re checking out the discovery of a frozen alien and its ship. The movie is The Thing and other than Winstead, the only other slightly recognizable actor in the cast of mostly unknowns is Joel Edgerton, whose star rose recently in Warrior . He’s an American helicopter pilot and as close as the characters get to a love interest.

'I Don't Know How She Does It' or why they made it
I not only have nothing nice to say about this movie, but it also is so bad it is a struggle to say anything about it at all.
A better title: I Don’t Know Why She Did It . Could it be “she” has no options other than getting cast as a cliche TV-like character. What else can you do after being stuck for years on TV in Sex and the City ?

Fart jokes at age 45?
Adam Sandler is still doing them and usually within five minutes of the beginning of a movie. Hard to believe isn’t it? And he doesn’t stick with just one. Sandler’s form of “humor” can be found twice, thrice, sometimes even four times in a film.
Prepubescent boys find a toot a hoot. By the time you’re 15, fart jokes are pretty much passe. Maybe it’s Sandler’s signature. Modern comedians tend not to use them. Billy Crystal is one of the few. He’s simply marvelous. A lot of old-time comedians did. Jimmy Durante said goodnight to Mrs. Calabash. Bill Cosby’s signature is, “Hey, hey, hey.” George Burns told his lovely bride to, “Say goodnight, Gracie.”
