Cancer claims cookbook author Lukins

By the Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Sheila Lukins, a store owner and cookbook author who helped change how America eats, has died.

She was 66.

Colleague Laurie Griffith said Lukins died late last month at her Manhattan home. She was diagnosed with brain cancer three months ago.

Lukins was an owner of The Silver Palate on New York City's Upper West Side. The store and several Silver Palate cookbooks introduced people to flavors from places such as Greece and Morocco.

Lukins' cookbooks have sold several million copies.

She also was the food editor at Parade magazine.
