The Patriots struggled in their first year of 11-man football, but Olson is optimistic that the team's improvement in the latter half of 2008 -- including its first-ever victory as a 2B program over Dayton -- was more than a blip on the radar.
He's also confident in the overall potential of the incoming freshmen.
"The freshman kids are really good," he said. "They had a really successful middle school career and only lost one game by one point last year."
One of those freshmen is Olson's son, Mike Jr., who takes over at quarterback. Simpkins becomes the featured back with the graduation of Beau Nichols, and Simpkins also anchors a defense that returns six starters.
With a turnout of 18 players, each Patriot will log significant playing time.

Waitsburg-Prescott might face challenge in Southeast 2B
True, football is tough to compare with basketball. The ball is shaped differently. One is played indoors, the other almost exclusively outdoors. But you watch. Waitsburg-Prescott's football title could give them the championship swagger it needs to repeat on the hardwood.
Plus, the Cardinals return Zach Bartlow (15.3), one of the league's top returning scorers.
But W-P must stay on its game, because Asotin will again challenge for the SE 2B title.

RICHLAND -- A last second-heave went awry as the Liberty Christian Patriots boys basketball team couldn't complete a rally Wednesday in a nonconference game in Richland.
River View escaped with a season-opening 48-47 victory. Liberty Christian pulled within the final score on a 3-pointer by Tyler Morris. The Patriots then fouled and the Panthers missed both free throws.
The ensuing full-court heave was off the mark, though.
