atomictown - get a half-life
Gary Wolcott's "Mr. Movie" column has appeared in the Tri-City Herald since 1992. The Tri-City native now lives in Portland, Ore., and watches about 250 movies each year. This member of Portland's association of movie critics, Far From Hollywood, believes movies are made to be seen on theater screens and should be seen there and not on television screens. 'Ponyo': Anime from the master

Ponyo is a magical little female fish that loves a little boy.

She wants to become human. Nothing complicated. Ponyo is just a beautiful love story drawn with brilliant, clashing colors, non-symmetrical characters and a short, to-the-point moral.

-- Times, trailer, theaters.

Children, whose real-life drawings are much like writer/director Hayao Miyazaki’s style, instantly recognize and understand where he’s going and love his movies.

Adults — of course — love them, too. Miyazaki is the best and best known of anime’s artists. For a couple of decades he has proved you don’t need CGI generated characters, three-dimensions, and all of the splashes and dashes of modern animation to make a great movie.

And in every one of Miyazaki’s movies there is one character that I fall in love with and want to rip off of the screen and take home with me.

This time, it’s Ponyo.

Mr. Movie rating: 5 stars

Rated G. It opens Friday, Aug. 14 at Regal’s Columbia Mall 8.

5 stars to 4 1/2 stars: Must see on the big screen
4 stars to 3 1/2 stars: Good film, see it if it's your type of movie.
3 stars to 2 1/2 stars: Wait until it comes out on video.
2 stars to 1 star: Don't bother.
0 stars: Speaks for itself.
