Artist blends science, art in his still-life paintings

WALLA WALLA -- Todd Telander's paintings spread through a variety of artistic genres.

He explains his artistic eye as an "intimate relationship between ordinary objects" that he splashes across his canvases that's meant to bring balance, depth and mystery to his creations.

An exhibition of Telander's work will be featured through August at Brassierie Four. A reception for the artist is planned from 4-6 p.m. Aug. 7 at the French bakery at 4 E. Main St. in downtown Walla Walla.

What makes Telander's work unique could have something to do with his logical left brain melding with his more creative right brain.

"I went to college to get a degree in biology but the part I most enjoyed were the lab classes where we got to draw animals and plants in our notebooks," he said. "Then I discovered scientific illustration as a viable career and was hooked. Eventually, I learned the skills of fine art morphing the illustration into wildlife art."

Inspiration for the work to be exhibited at Brasserie Four comes from the work of European post-impressionist masters Morandi and Cezanne, Telander said.

He crafted his own interpretation of traditional still life and interlaced it with fruit, bottles, candlesticks, cans as well as the human figure.
