The First Thursday Artwalk is from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 6 in downtown Kennewick.
Red balloons will flag the shops participating in the art walk, which includes: Laura Gable Studio, 17 N. Auburn St.; Kennewick Coffee Company and Old Roxy Theatre Antiques & Gifts, 101 W. Kennewick Ave.; Hoops Body Art, 115 W. Kennewick Ave.; Zinful Panini Grill & Wine Bar, 114 W. Kennewick Ave.; T&L Office Supply, 203 W. Kennewick Ave.; Fantome Glass, 120 W. Kennewick Ave.; You & I Framing Gallery, 214 W. First Ave.
Admission is free. Visitors can meet artists, look at art, listen to music and snack on appetizers.

Dorothy McCall will be the speaker at the next Sons of Norway cultural program at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 17 in the fellowship hall at the First Lutheran Church, at the corner of Highway 395 and Yelm Street in Kennewick.
McCall holds a degree in art history, and her special interest is in Scandinavian art history. Admission is free, and refreshments will be served.

The monthly ArtWalk happens Oct. 6 at various businesses in downtown Kennewick.
From 6 to 9 p.m. about 15 establishments will stay open late featuring the work of various artists.
Just follow the balloon trail along Kennewick Avenue for the selected venues, or pick up a map at any of the participating businesses listed below.

The 509Art organization will hold an open discussion for anyone interested in the arts from 7 to 9 p.m. Nov. 18 in the old JCPenney building at the corner of Benton Street and Kennewick Avenue in downtown Kennewick.
The public is invited to share ideas about connecting, communicating and celebrating the arts.

Fast Focus: Different learning styles
Since every person on this planet is a unique gift to the world, it stands to reason that many young people have a variety of learning styles as well. Some children will learn no matter how you teach them; others need to be reached in an alternative-learning style.
I believe very strongly in public education because it teaches kids to get along in a diverse world. However, there may be better ways to engage our students by capitalizing on their interests. I would love to see more schools-within-a-school that would give students with special interests such as performing arts, philosophy, technology, math and science, more emphasis in those areas. (Notice I put arts and philosophy first, because I often feel we push the sciences rather than the arts, remember the degrees are bachelor of arts or bachelor of science).
While I like the idea of charter schools, I see problems as to how to assure consistency if entire communities or states converted to having charter schools. I am truly for any program that emphasizes
