EVERETT -- A bad inning by Brad McAtee turned into a long day for the Tri-City Dust Devils.
McAtee's turn in the rotation lasted just one inning plus four batters, but it left the Dust Devils in a deep hole on their way to an 11-4 loss to the Everett AquaSox on Monday.
McAtee (0-3) walked the bases loaded with the first three batters he faced, though it looked like Tri-City (23-14) might escaped cheaply when the next batter grounded into a double play. But back-to-back singles, a double, a walk and another hit led to a five-run inning for the AquaSox (23-14).
They didn't let up in the second, with a pair of singles, a home run and another walk chasing McAtee, who walked five and gave up seven hits and nine earned runs.
The Dust Devils bullpen kept the Sox quiet for the remainder of the day, but Tri-City couldn't generate enough offense to make it a game.
The Dust Devils made a small ruckus in the fifth, with an error and a Joey Wong single setting up a minor rally. Matt Sanders followed with a sacrifice fly, and then Tim Wheeler hit his second homer of the summer to get Tri-City within single digits at 11-3.
Bo Bowman smacked his seventh homer in the sixth -- his fourth long ball in seven games -- but that was it for the Dust Devils offense.

EVERETT -- Christian Bergman, the Tri-City Dust Devils ace pitcher, got hit hard Sunday in his pursuit of the Northwest League scoreless innings record, allowing five first-inning runs in a 6-3 loss to the Everett AquaSox.
Bergman, a second-year right-hander out of Altadena, Calif., came into the game with a streak of 30 2/3 shutout innings, just 1 1/3 shy of the NWL record of 32 held by Larry Loughlin (in 1965) and Joseph Carboni (in 1966), both of the Eugene Emeralds.

Halman tragedy sends ripples through NWL
Anyone dying young is terribly sad, but the story about Greg Halman hurts my soul.
If you missed the news, Halman a promising, 24-year-old rookie outfielder with the Seattle Mariners died as a result of a stab wound Monday morning at his apartment in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Investigators are now investigating the possibility that his brother wielded the weapon that killed him.
If this is true, the story goes well beyond tragedy and into pure senselessness.

The Dust Devils locker room was dead silent after the loss. They built some momentum after a 5-3 win yesterday to keep their title hopes alive.
