EVERETT -- In the first two games of the Everett AquaSox's five game series with the Tri-City Dust Devils, they gave up runs early and often.
In total, Everett gave up 18 runs in the two games.
Saturday night was a much different story.
Six-and-a-half innings went by before either team was able to get on the board, but the result was the same -- Tri-City took its third straight from the AquaSox, 3-1.
Great pitching often overcomes great hitting. Both teams started the game with great pitching, but only the Dust Devils finished with it and it showed in the final innings.
Everett starter Taylor Stanton pitched seven innings, giving up just three hits with eight strikeouts.
"Stanton threw outstanding, he was ahead all night and hit his spots," Everett manager John Tamargo said. "We wasted a great pitching performance by him."
Tri-City starter Rob Scahill was equally impressive. Scahill pitched five no-hit innings.
"My off-speed stuff was terrible. I threw four-seam and two-seam fastballs every other pitch," Scahill said. "It just shows if you locate (pitches) you can be successful."
Still Everett had some chances with the Dust Devils committing four errors and Scahill walking three batters. But the AquaSox didn't score until the seventh off reliever Kyle Walker.
The way the game had been going, it appeared that run might hold up, but Tri-City answered in the eighth as Alex Feinberg and Ben Paulsen each had RBI singles.
In the top of the ninth, Tri-City created a little more breathing room when Kevin Clark scored on a sacrifice fly by Tim Wheeler.
The bullpen did the rest for Tri-City (23-12), with Rhett Ballard picking up the win.
"The bullpen has been great all year," Scahill said. "They do a fantastic job keeping us in games and winning games."

Led by Jared Simon, the Dust Devils won 18-7. They banged out 19 hits and hit four home runs -- including two by Simon.
The right-fielder hit a solo shot in the fourth, a three-run homer in the fifth, an RBI double in the sixth and an RBI single in the seventh. He finished 5-for-6 with six RBIs, while doubling his home run total for the season.

EVERETT -- Christian Bergman, the Tri-City Dust Devils ace pitcher, got hit hard Sunday in his pursuit of the Northwest League scoreless innings record, allowing five first-inning runs in a 6-3 loss to the Everett AquaSox.
Bergman, a second-year right-hander out of Altadena, Calif., came into the game with a streak of 30 2/3 shutout innings, just 1 1/3 shy of the NWL record of 32 held by Larry Loughlin (in 1965) and Joseph Carboni (in 1966), both of the Eugene Emeralds.
He struck out Everett leadoff man Marcus Littlewood to start the game and come within one inning of the mark. With one out, Bergman then allowed three consecutive hits, the last of which was an RBI single by Jharmidy De Jesus, to end the scoreless streak at 31 innings.

Anyone dying young is terribly sad, but the story about Greg Halman hurts my soul.
If you missed the news, Halman — a promising, 24-year-old rookie outfielder with the Seattle Mariners — died as a result of a stab wound Monday morning at his apartment in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Investigators are now investigating the possibility that his brother wielded the weapon that killed him.
If this is true, the story goes well beyond tragedy and into pure senselessness.

The Tri-City Dust Devils announced in a statement Friday that Washington State University graduate Chris King will be their new radio play-by-play announcer.
King, who graduated from WSU in 2009, spent three of the past four summers as the voice of the Wenatchee AppleSox of the West Coast League. He also does play-by-play for Boise State women's basketball.
Jason Schwartz, the Dust Devils' play-by-play announcer last summer, has a new gig. The USC graduate will broadcast for the Lancaster JetHawks of the California League.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- The Tri-City Dust Devils' pitching staff came up with another gem Friday at Nat Bailey Stadium in British Columbia, holding the Vancouver Canadians to just two runs on five hits.
Problem was, the Dust Devils (17-13) couldn't find any offense to support it. Tri-City finished the game with 10 runners left on base, leaving runners in scoring position in five of the nine innings.
Kevin Patterson hit an RBI triple to center field in the first inning, and Stephen McQuail followed with an RBI double to left to make it 2-0 Vancouver.
