TACOMA -- For two years now, the state Senior American Legion baseball tournament has separated teams from the same league for the postseason, sending them to each of the four regional tournaments.
And for two years, the Central Washington League has flexed its muscle.
The CWL represents half of the field as the state tournament begins today at Heidleberg-Davis Park in Tacoma.
Defending champion and national runner-up Twin City opens at 9 a.m. against the Spokane Blue Devils.
The Kennewick Bandits, third at state last year, take on fellow CWL team Yakima Beetles at 4 p.m.
The Titans, Bandits and Yakima Valley Pepsi Pak (noon start vs. Vancouver Athletics) were the last three teams standing in last year's tournament, the first time the state separated league teams for the regional tournaments.
Should both Twin City and Kennewick win, they would face each other at 4 p.m. Sunday.
The tournament is true double-elimination, so they could play again for the championship.

The Herald's boys and girls basketball league preview is on its way. Subscribers and single-copy buyers will have it in their hands by the end of the week.
In the meantime, I've been enjoying my time catching up to a lot of the area coaches and chatting basketball with them. We really do have some terrific coaches around the Tri-Cities. Unfortunately, that sometimes gets taken for granted.
