The "Battle of the Banks and Credit Unions" food drive begins today. Food collection barrels are inside most local bank and credit union branches and will remain in place through Nov. 30.
The competition between the banks and credit unions will see who can collect the most food. The winner will be announced Dec. 3.

YAKIMA -- After 14 years banking with Bank of America, Carol Pimentel was ready for an alternative.
She didn't like the five-day holds on her financial aid checks, having fees to keep a savings account or to receive printed bank statements, or the confusing changes that required hours of reading bank documentation.
She switched to Solarity Credit Union in Yakima three months ago.

HAPO Community Credit Union and Windermere Real Estate Tri-Cities have formed the HAPO /Windermere Tri-Cities Community Enrichment Foundation.
Dave Schulz, president and CEO of HAPO, Dave Retter, owner and managing broker of Windermere, and key people from both businesses will sit on the foundation board. Their plan is to make donations to organizations in the Tri-Cities, which will increase the educational and health of the community.
The foundation's first donation was $50,000 toward Columbia Basin College's new planetarium project.

HAPO to sponsor cancer center golf tournament
HAPO Community Credit Union announced Friday it will become the permanent sponsor of the annual golf tournament fundraiser for the Tri-Cities Cancer Center.
The event is being renamed the HAPO Golf Classic Supporting the Tri-Cities Cancer Center Foundation.
"We believe in the cancer center," said HAPO CEO Dave Schulz. "It shares the same values as the staff of HAPO."

Kennewick's landmark building popularly nicknamed "the flashcube" has new owners and will soon have a new, more modern look.
HAPO Community Credit Union closed the sale Thursday, said Steve Anderson, HAPO's executive vice president and chief operating officer.
Anderson declined to release the sale price.
