There's an old idea in Washington politics that a "Cascade Curtain" divides east from west. This blog tackles the political issues that matter to Eastern Washingtonians, from Congress on down to your local irrigation district. The lost art of the thank-you note

Two candidates for Kennewick City Council get a tip of the hat for courtesy.

Some people would rather visit an oral surgeon than subject themselves to a reporter’s questions. But not Wendi Venden and Sharon Brown, who hope to be elected to the council in November.

Each took time after recent hour-long interviews with me to send hand-written thank-you notes.

Venden’s was on American Greetings stock, while Brown’s was a Hallmark card.

Both candidates are making first-time ventures into the political arena. Could that explain their uncommon, yet refreshing, politeness toward news media?

Venden wants to unseat Mayor Tom Moak, while Brown hopes to replace James Hempstead.
