DETROIT -- Dave Villwock drove the U-16 Miss Elam Plus to the top qualifying speed of 158.098 mph during the 100th running of the APBA Gold Cup in Detroit.
Villwock's speed just barely beat out Steve David in the U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto at 157.379.
The U-3 Miss Chrysler Jeep and driver Jimmy King have yet to qualify.
Heat racing begins today with the winner-take-all final set for Sunday.
