A fire apparently started by a train Saturday night burned 250 acres along the tracks running parallel to Canal Drive and Highway 240 in Kennewick, said Chris Hutsell, acting captain for Kennewick Fire Station 2.
The fire started about 8:30 p.m. as a result of sparks from a passing train, officials said.
No one was injured and one private shed was partially damaged, Hutsell said.
Crews from Kennewick, Richland, Pasco, Benton County fire districts 1 and 4, Walla Walla Fire District 5 and Franklin County Fire District 3 responded with 16 engines and 40 to 50 firefighters, Kennewick fire officials said.
Officials were on the scene until about 4 a.m. and monitored the site again late Sunday morning to make sure all hot spots were out, Hutsell said.
